Dennis, David Gilpin, Mark Weidenbecher, Corresponding Author: [email protected] Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, USA and University Hospitals of Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH USA Introduction Currently, the treatment for tracheal stenosis in infants is to use costal cartilage for laryngotracheal reconstruction (LTR) to widen the tracheal lumen. However, there is not sufficient costal cartilage for infants less than 6 months in age, plus there is the potential for pneumothorax when harvesting costal cartilage. To address this problem, auricular chondrocytes were used to engineer a cartilage patch for LTR in a rabbit model.

Tissue-engineered cartilage as a graft source for laryngotracheal reconstruction: a pig model.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the feasibility of using tissue-engineered cartilage for laryngotracheal reconstruction in the pig model. DESIGN Auricular cartilage was harvested from 3 young swine. The cartilage was digested, processed, and suspended and a cell culture was obtained. The cells were then suspended in 3 mL of a 30% solution of a biodegradable polymer (Pluronic F-127) (polyethylene oxide/...

Autologous Cricoid Cartilage as a Graft for Airway Reconstruction in an Emergent Technique - A Case Report

Introduction: Laryngotracheal stenosis can be caused after traumatic injuries to the neck from the subglottic larynx to the trachea. Patients with laryngotracheal stenosis often need a tracheotomy and occasionally may become tracheotomy dependent. Different procedures have been described for the management of these lesions. Management options include techniques of endoscopic dilation, laser res...

Vascularized composite autograft for adult laryngotracheal stenosis and reconstruction.

BACKGROUND Adult laryngotracheal reconstruction for airway stenosis and after oncologic ablation can be extremely challenging. METHODS Patients with the above conditions not amenable to or refractory to conventional treatments were offered specialized reconstruction by wrapping a contoured costal cartilage graft with a vascularized microvascular carrier. All constructs were lined with buccal ...
